มีความหมายว่า "เคยมี" ใช้เมื่อต้องการจะบอกว่า "มีอะไรอยู่ที่ไหนในอดีต" เช่น

Singular	Plural
There was...	There were...

ถ้าหากต้องทำให้เป็นประโยคปฏิเสธ เราจะเพิ่ม

"not" ที่ "was" หรือ "were"

ถ้าต้องการทำประโยคให้เป็นประโยคคำถามต้องใส่

"was" หรือ "were" ก่อน "there"

ตัวอย่าง

There was a lightning storm last night. (ในประประโยค there ใช้กับคำนามที่นับได้ เป็นนามเอกพจน์ = พายุ)
There were many things to do and see at the amusement park. (ในประโยคนี้ there ใช้กับคำนาม นับได้ พหูพจน์) There was also a lot of food there. (ในประโยคนี้ there ใช้กับคำนามนับไม่ได้ อาหาร)
There were a lot of students on this website last night. Were there a lot of students on this website last week?


There wasn't any furniture in the apartment. It was almost empty.
There weren't any people in the hotel room. It was empty.
Was there a lot of food at the party? Yes, there was.
Were there a lot of people at the meeting? No, there weren't. How many peoplewere there? There were only four people.
